JDRF is the leading global organization funding type 1 diabetes (T1D) research. JDRF’s goal is to progressively remove the impact of T1D from people’s lives until we achieve a world without T1D. JDRF collaborates with a wide spectrum of partners and is the only organization with the scientific resources, regulatory influence, and a working plan to better treat, prevent, and eventually cure T1D.
We created the Ellie’s Elephants Walk to Cure Diabetes team in 2004 just three weeks after Ellie was diagnosed. Our ‘team’ was small that day in September 2004 – it was just the four of us. It was the first day the clouds parted just a bit after the devastating news we got on August 30, 2004.
We’ve been advocates and volunteers for JDRF since August 2004. We’ve walked every year. Our team has grown since then, with family and friends joining us and raising money for type 1 diabetes research.
We organized our first golf outing in 2005. We had 100 golfers show up and were amazed at the support and fun we could have while raising money for JDRF. We continue to have a golf outing every year, as our primary fundraiser for JDRF.
Steve & Katie have ridden their bicycles thousands of miles since 2006 in the Ride to Cure Diabetes. In 2013, Ellie was finally able to join them and rode 64 miles on her bicycle in Nashville, TN in her first Ride to Cure Diabetes. In 2015, Anna joined our band of cyclists and completed her first Ride to Cure Diabetes in LaCrosse, WI. where Ellie completed her first 100 mile ride. In 2016, Steve & Katie completed their 14th rides, Ellie will completed her 6th and Anna finished her 3rd Ride to Cure Diabetes on Amelia Island, Fl where Anna finished her first 100 miles with the rest of the family. 2017 found us in Loveland, CO for a lovely 100km ride in the hills of the Rocky Mountains. 2018 Ellie, Steve & Katie were in LaCrosse, WI for another 100km route along the Mississippi River.
2019 will find Ellie, Steve & Katie (Anna has golf team tryouts again) in LaCrosse, WI in August and then headed to Death Valley, CA for Ellie’s 10th Ride to Cure Diabetes. 10 rides before she turns 20!
We’ve had friends and family join us over the years – you’ll see their donation links there to the right side of this page!
Katie and Ellie testified at a United States Congressional hearing in June 2005 called: Juvenile Diabetes: Examining the Personal Toll on Families, Financial Costs to the Federal Health Care System, and Research Progress Toward a Cure
We will continue raising money and doing everything possible to turn type 1 into type none. We Walk/Ride/Golf for Ellie and the millions of others who live with type 1 diabetes around the world.
